What Inspectors Actually Look At

A DOT annual inspection covers far more than a quick walkaround. Under FMCSA rules, a qualified inspector has to check the brake system, steering and suspension components, tires and wheels, lighting, exhaust, coupling devices, and the frame — on both the tractor and every trailer in the fleet. Missing even one item can mean an out-of-service order, and that's downtime nobody budgets for.

The Checklist We Use Before Every Inspection

• Brake linings, drums, and air lines for wear, cracking, or leaks
• Steering linkage and tie rod ends for play or damage
• Tires for tread depth, sidewall damage, and matched dual sizes
• All required lighting, reflectors, and marker lamps
• Frame, crossmembers, and coupling devices for cracks or corrosion
• Exhaust system routing and mounting

Running through this list before the official inspection catches most of the issues that lead to failed inspections — and it's a lot cheaper to fix a worn brake lining in our shop than to have a truck pulled out of service on the road.

Keep Your Paperwork as Clean as Your Equipment

Inspectors will also want to see current inspection reports, maintenance records, and proof that any noted defects were repaired.
