What the DPF Actually Does
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from your engine's exhaust so it doesn't go straight into the air. Over time, that trapped soot has to be burned off in a process called regeneration, or "regen" — otherwise the filter clogs, backpressure builds, and the engine starts losing power or throwing fault codes.
Passive vs. Active vs. Forced Regen
Most regens happen passively, using normal exhaust heat during highway driving. When duty cycles involve a lot of idling or short trips, the truck triggers an active regen, injecting extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature and burn the soot. If neither happens in time, the truck may need a forced regen done manually, or in more serious cases, a filter cleaning or replacement.
Common Signs Your Aftertreatment System Needs Attention
- Reduced power or a derate warning on the dash
- Frequent regen cycles or regens that won't complete
- Increased fuel consumption
- Check engine or aftertreatment fault codes
Ignoring these symptoms doesn't just risk a derate on the highway — it can lead to a damaged DPF, a fouled DOC, or turbo damage from excess backpressure.
